020 - LEELOO

So on my last trip to BINDERS I picked up this funky new sketch book - it's a 6 x 12 Aquabee 'Tree Free' Hemp Sketch Book... it's only 20 sheets so I figure I have no excuse whatsoever not to be able to fill it. Leeloo (The 5th Element) here is another piece I'd been wanting to do for a while.

019 - ELLE DRIVER

So early Friday I finished up a commercial project that I was working on, having wrapped on both DEMON'S REGRET and SALEM: QUEEN OF THORNS prior to that, Friday was the first time in a year where I could take the weekend off and not have something hanging over my head. It felt good... so good in fact that I didn't draw anything all weekend and spent most of Sunday, cleaning my workspace and re-organizing all of my clutter. I figured I would draw something just for fun and settled on my favorite Deadly Viper, Elle Driver.

DR3 / The Wrap-Up

So if my guess is right, DEMON'S REGRET Issue 3 should be on its way to the printer right about now. It’s been a lot of fun working on this book and a real learning experience for me being that it was my first professional work. While attending HeroesCon in Charlotte, NC the year before last my buddy Don Thomas introduced me to the very talented Sanford Greene who is really one of the nicest guys I’ve met in this business. Sanford looked through my portfolio and said to me, “I know a guy that you should meet”. He then introduced me to Mitch Brown who at the time had a couple of different ideas he wanted to produce but was looking for an Artist… I just happened to be one and the rest as they say is history.
Along the way this book has had some great folks involved that through their contribution have made it that much cooler. Big thanks to Inker Nathan Massengill who championed this book from the beginning, our Publisher Ed Dukeshire over at Digital Webbing and also Cover Artist extraordinaire, Michael Golden. As always my gratitude goes out to Brian Stelfreeze who always takes the time to look over my stuff and provide me invaluable direction and feedback on how I can continue to improve my work. I would also like to thank my wonderful collaborators, the man with the hat Mike Kilgore on Colors for issues 1 and 2. Matthew ‘Soulcore’ Warlick for jumping in for Colors on issue 3 and Nate Pride on Letters – Last but not least Writer, Mitch Brown who took a chance on an unknown and let me play with his toys.

Brian Stelfreeze once told me not to hand letter my artwork and while I make it a rule to do everything Brian tells me to do, bad habits are hard to break.

Doctor Horrible - Part II

So I went back into the piece and added Penny, which as I got into it I realized that the reason I didn't draw her in the first place was that I didn't have a very good handle on her look. I mean Captain Hammer was easy, Nathan Fillion already looks like a superhero so all I had to do was beef him up a little bit. The good Doctor was easy too although I went away from the Neil Patrick Harris likeness a bit in order to 'funny book' him up some. Penny was another story. I've always found drawing women more difficult then drawing men and Felicia Day has this very pixie-ish look to her which I've never been able to really get right. The fact that I drew her singing probably didn't help me either... anyway it occurs to me that this piece was supposed to be just for fun and somehow I turned it into work...

G4 / Attack of the Show

So apparently Mr. Chris Morgan, Co-Writer of Boom! Studios SALEM: QUEEN OF THORNS was a guest on G4's Attack of the Show coverage of the San Diego ComicCon and just couldn't stop gushing over my artwork... well, actually I never get mentioned and he spent most of his time talking about that little independent film he wrote, WANTED as well as his next project, a film adaptation of GEARS OF WAR but they did some nifty close ups of my covers for Salem... so I think we all know where it's really at!

Doctor Horrible - Part I

Okay, so if you don't know who Dr. Horrible is I strongly suggest that you get to know him as it is quite possibly one of the funniest and most inventive things I've seen in a good long while. Being a huge Joss Whedon fan it was an easy sell for me. It seems like forever since I sat down to draw something just for me, just for fun and I had been itching to do this one so once I struck on a bit of breathing room I put it down. Anyway, here's the first pass at it -I'm still kicking around some ideas in as far as what to add. Penny will need to get in there for sure. In the six-degrees of separation department, until I found out that my favorite MLB player Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez got traded to the NY YANKEES today (woot!) the highlight of my day had been getting an incredibly generous and kind comment on my blog from one of my favorite artists - Eric Canete, who coincidentally did a Captain Hammer short titled, BE LIKE ME that is featured on My Space / Dark Horse Presents... how's that for a coinky-dink?

SALEM - Issue No. 1 / In Stores Now

Okay, so I'm a little late on this one... it came out last week.

Walking into my LCS and seeing copies of my books on the racks is very cool, I can't imagine how that ever gets old but I'm sure the grissled veterans out there are over it - this kid's gonna enjoy it as long as he can! Anywho... another little treat for me, the kind folks at Boom! decided to give me a little more 'air time' and have a spotlight on me in the back of all of their books shipping in May for the Creator of the Month Q&A - Ha! It's like getting that little stick of gum with my baseball cards... tastes about the same too.

SALEM: QUEEN OF THORNS – No. 1 Review on PROJECT FANBOY

“The artwork is amazing, and the storyline packs a unique punch itself. The dialogue flows the way it should for a professionally done story such as this one. I also can happily say I like the characters, the plot, and the little twists so far thrown in. I’m also a big fan of stories that have history to them, and the comic shows it and uses it quite well to develop the entirety of the tale”

MegaCon ‘08

Let me start with a big thanks to Beth Widera and all of the folks at MegaCon as well as the OC Convention Center for putting on such a great show! It was an awesome experience and I look forward to returning.

Now if you’ll excuse me I need to launch into a bit of ass-kissing… the highlight of the weekend for me was not only getting to meet but hang out with Boom! Studios Editor-In-Chief, MARK WAID (Kingdom Come, Superman: Birthright, Flash, Captain America). I shared a table with Mr. Waid and on Friday in any case sat between him and Joe Quesada… yeah that was my reaction too. Now my interaction with Mr. Waid prior to actually meeting him has always been positive but seeing him interact with his fans as well as other Professionals was very cool. He’s just a genuinely nice guy – I mean seriously people were coming up to have him sign their copies of 52 – all 52 issues and never once did he gripe or complain.
I only regret not bringing my copies of KINGDOM COME for him to sign.

A Special BIG Thanks to all of the people that came by the table and stopped to chat, get a sketch and grab a copy of the book – You’re awesome!

The Raven

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -Only this, and nothing more.'
